David Binks – Round 1 Recap from Charlotte

Charlotte Motor Speedway, NC. (May 29, 2012) – David Binks in the Best Buy/Serve from American Express experienced a tough debut in the Global RallyCross Championship but still came away with 7th overall in the race for the Global RallyCross Championship.

After a difficult time during qualifying, Binks found himself in the same heat as fan favorites Brian Deegan and Travis Pastrana. After a strong second place in the first heat, Binks found himself in great door banging race with Pastrana in the second heat in a race he described as “one of the best of my life” and this delivered another second place and a guaranteed place in the Main Final.

Binks got a good start in the Final and saw an opportunity to shoot into the Joker Lap with Ford colleagues Marcus Grönholm and Topi Heikkenen. Coming out of the corner he was able to get up the inside of Topi and a line up the inside of Grönholm but he couldn’t get the traction and slotted into third.

The GRC final never really settled down and soon Binks found himself in a battle with Dave Mirra. With his brake fluid now boiling Binks found a soft peddle at the end of the 130mph straight and as he tried to control the car, hit the water filled barrels head on – seriously shortening his Fiesta. Binks was able to carry on albeit at reduced speed but this enabled him to pick up more points with a 7th overall finish.

“I am not happy with the result” said Binks “the Best Buy/Serve Fiesta was better than 7th and I am frustrated that we couldn’t get the car on the podium. My mechanics worked hard all weekend and I apologized to them for taking out the water barrels but we have to put the situation right in two weeks time in Texas”

The next round of the Global RallyCross Championship takes place at Texas Motor Speedway on June 9, 2012 with the Izod IndyCar series. If you need more of GRC install the Best Buy Racing Global Rallycross Mobile App from the App Store and get behind the scenes insights.
