Ford has unveiled the Everest concept, a seven-seat version of the global Ranger pickup truck, which means it is built on a body on frame platform and it has a RWD layout for the drive train. The Everest concept was created by the Ford design and product development team in Australia. The SUV's entry-level engine is expected to be a 2.5 gas-burning four-cylinder that makes 163 horsepower and 165 lb-ft. of torque. Buyers after more grunt will be able to order a five-cylinder turbodiesel rated at 197 ponies and 276 lb-ft. of twist. Both rear- and all-wheel drive models will be offered.

A Ford statement says the “Everest Concept is a perfect complement to the rest of the Ford SUV portfolio”. Ford Motor Company chief operating officer Mark Fields says the car is designed for rugged work.

“This is our vision for a large, seven-seat off-road SUV to allow our customers to take on the world and it was created by our world-class design team here in Australia,” Fields says.

“We believe our customers will love the distinctive design, which clearly showcases the Ford Everest Concept’s exceptional off-road capability and toughness.”

The Everest follows many of Ford’s design cues, with a trapezoidal grille and chunky styling. And Ford says the car will be “not only purposeful but true to Ford’s fun-to-drive DNA”.

“Nothing sums up the Australian way of life and the Australian spirit like an SUV,” Fields says.

“This is one special SUV, really designed to set a new benchmark among SUVs. this concept gives a hint of what the vehicle we will put into production will be like,” Fields says. “Today 40,000 Australians prefer large off-road SUVs.”

Alan Mulally, Ford’s global president, sang the praises of the new concept.

“Designed right here in Australia for Australians, and, for the world.”

The only question we have here at CoolFords.com is this, will this new Everest eventually become the next generation Explorer? as Mr. Mulally mentioned it was for the world as well. All we know for sure is the new Everest concept has a more traditional SUV look compared with the North American Explorer, which is very reminiscent of a CUV. The RWD based body on frame platform is definitely more rugged than our FWD car based Explorer, and that is why I believe the Everest would do well in the North American market as the next Explorer.
