Fireball on track - All-American Speedway
Fireball
Thanks, Jason!
Ah, the story of „Project Fireball“… this is a street legal replica of Fireball Roberts' last car that I built from a plain-vanilla 1964 Galaxie 500 that had been stolen and then torched by the thieves (with only moderate success, thankfully). I am the 3rd owner, having purchased the partially-burned car off of eBay last October.
Alas, the pictures at All-American Speedway in Roseville, CA were static shots since the track officials wouldn't let me do any hot laps. So I guess the only true track time the car has gotten so far was as a pace car for the Historic Stock Car Racing Series in their support races at the 2007 San Jose Grand Prix, where I also served as a color announcer on behalf of the group.
But, despite the fact this car is a replica, it has received a thumbs-up from none other than the daughter of Fireball Roberts! That alone has made my project worth the effort to me.
The project is not yet complete, though. This winter, money willing, I'm hoping to get the car's performance more on par with the history it portrays.
Again, thanks for the props!
- Don
Sometimes you don't have to be the best there is, just the best of what's out there.
