Hybrid Technology

Here's a question: Why did Ford choose the Escape and not the Focus for its hybrid automobile? Is it in Ford's agreement with Toyota to not make a car that can get over 50mpg and compete with the Prius? I mean, the Prius is getting all the attention because its mpg is so high, I mean the car is not much to look at but its a hot seller right now. If Ford made their 4door Focus using the hybrid technology I bet they could get their sales back up.
