How hard is it to have a remote starter fitted to a car that doesn't have one currently, and are there any safety/theft risks involved to having one fitted? I'd like to consider it now that winter is coming around.

Almost all vehicles can have one installed. Some are easier than others but its not hard to even do yourself, about as hard as installing a new radio in your car. I personally think there is more danger from locking yourself out of the car than there is theft, but it could vary based on your are. No clue of the actual statistics.
