How does the lifespan of a hybrid car compare to a normal car? Are they likely to last 20 years if well cared for? Are they significantly higher maintenance than normal cars are?

What I know for fact: 1.

What I know for fact: 1. All Ford dealerships with a garage for repair work should have a certified hybrid mechanic on staff. 2. Hybrids haven't been in mass production for long enough to have an idea of the average lifetime, but everyone I know who has one has never had any issue with them lasting worse than a gas car. 3. None of them have ever needed anything more than scheduled maintenance, minus the one who had an unfortunate meeting with a moose. The prius lost…

Cars rarely win in a situation like that unfortunately. Its always a little scary when buying something that is an unknown because it hasn't been out long enough.

Thanks for all the opinions.

Probably more expensive

Since they are newer and less common, chances are they will be much more expensive to repair should there be a problem. Not enough mechanics have worked on them to become familiar with the way they are set up.

This I hadn't considered.

This I hadn't considered. It would be fairly worrying to have a car that didn't have access to qualified engineers locally-not sure that I would want to be in that situation especially with how complex a hybrid is.

I am really wondering

I am really wondering myself if paying more at the start of having a car rather than all the years you will have it well if its really worth it or not. Many people don't just have the extra money some places are taking about getting a car like these.

I would like to know the

I would like to know the answer to this one as well. My daughter is thinking of buying a hybrid. A car is a necessity to her and her budget is tight. I wouldn't want to see her buy something that isn't worth the money if it costs an arm and a leg to fix.

If your budget is tight you

If your budget is tight you most likely won't be looking at a hybrid unless you find a really good deal or one that just showed up on the lot as a trade in. as much as I don't like to tout other brands a Honda Civic is a better choice as it maintains its value well for her to trade in if she chooses later.
