Dealing With the Heat
My car is black. Its the height of summer. This is bad news.
I have a child restraint in the back that gets so hot that we can't strap the child in for up to ten minutes after we start the car-needing instead to let it cool down.
How can I stop it overheating? I already use shades.
I can relate to the hot
I can relate to the hot metal on the seat belts as I burned myself recently on one. Do you have the rain guards over your windows so you can leave them open a little? Those would help keep some of the heat down as well as covering the seat with something. You definitely don't want the little ones getting burned.
I have a friend with full
I have a friend with full on black interior as well and has used the pull down single window slides to help with the heat. She also has the full size windshield covers that help a great deal as well. That is more than likely your best bet.
We tried this-tried a lot
We tried this-tried a lot of things. We keep a window or two cracked, have the shades on the side and rear windows, and a towel over the seat. The inside ambient temperature just gets so high that a towel won't help. We started the car one day to find that it was 120 degrees inside!
You might also consider
You might also consider buying a restraint that is a lighter color. They get dirty sooner, but many covers are hand washable to deal with that. Microfiber covered seats also seem to suffer less-just watch the buckles as they get hottest and can actually burn the child.
A baby wipe rubbed all over the seat will help cool it down really fast.
I would keep a towel in
I would keep a towel in the car and when the seat is not in use cover it completely with the towel. This will help out a lot. I had to do the same thing with leather seats in a car before. It makes a big difference.
Probably the best thing to
Probably the best thing to do is to just keep it out of direct sun as much as possible, such as parking it in a shady spot, and driving it during the cooler hours of the day, if you can. At least in winter, your car will be warmer than white ones, though!
There are reflective covers
There are reflective covers that you can put in the windscreen, as well as the window shades that you use. Mine has sunglasses on it!
I've seen too this solar powered fan that is supposed to cool your car, but I'd heard a lot of reports that it was basically a scam, and did nothing.
My mom bought me one of
My mom bought me one of these. Its rather cute and blows pretty hard, but no way is it going to make much of a difference if its really hot out and you're in full sun.
The towel on the seat, windscreens, etc are a better bet. At least for a younger child you can look into the seats that have the base and seat tht lifts out to be used in a stroller.

I thought for kids and
I thought for kids and adults they made the slip covers that went over majority of the metal parts for the belts. I could have swore I have seen these before but not sure where.
