I remember my dad changing his oil and just putting it in the trash. Today you'd better not be caught doing it. Others put it down the sewer. I just don't get why people can't just refill the oil container(s) that held the new oil with the old and then take it to a garage for disposal. Even our dump has a place for waste oil and it is free but people just don't care and are too lazy to take it there. I always take mine to the dump and empty it in the drum for waste oil.
Where do you put your oil? Any other horror stories out there?

I always take it to a local friend that run a small shop down the street and he will collect for his clients and those just in the area in case they don't know what to do with it. Good idea, I wish more did the same.
I take it to a garage that does all of my major work. They let me dump it into their waste barrel for no charge. I guess they figure that they make plenty of money off of me any way so they don't need to charge.
I'll be honest-I have all my oil changes done for me so I have never had any to dispose of. It sounds though as if you outlined the easiest way-re-filling the bottle and taking it to a garage.
I'm awful – I just take it to the garage. I know that do something that recycles the waste oil, although I'm not sure of the whole process. I could change it if I wanted to but it's just not something I bother with plus then they check a bunch of other stuff for me, too and sometimes wash the car for free, too.
At least it will be properly disposed of or recyled with you taking it to a garage. I still see people putting their waste oil in their trash. They figure if they bury deep enough in the can that people won't see it. Unfortunately for the most part they are right! I for one don't want oil in my drinking water!
We take ours down to the transfer station with the other recyclables if we decide to change our own. We normally have it done at a garage where they charge $5 to “dispose of it properly”. One time we got ticked off and asked if we could have it to dispose of ourselves. The mechanic almost had smoke come out his ears he was thinking so hard, lol.
I take mine down to the local dump as well for recycling. I would imagine my mechanic would probably take it for me as well, but he's alot further away.
There are some places that will allow you a discount next time you take your auto to them if you turn your oil in at the same place. Might want to check and see if your shop does that.
If it's not a Ford, walk!
My son changes my oil for me and he recycles it. I know I should do the oil changes myself but my old bones are getting creaky and I let the young buck do it now. He does a great job and he loves tinkering with cars so it's all good!
