I just don't get it

I just don't see the appeal of the low-profile tires and wheels. I think it can detract from the overall look of the car. It also looks like it would make for a bit of a rougher ride than we the normal profile tires. Also if you get one flat and your spare doesn't have the wheel then I think it would really make for a cruddy ride. Does anyone have any information on these?

Normally if you've put out the 1k+ cash to get low profile tires and rims you would have had the garage suggest you spring for a fifth tire and possibly another rim. I can't say they look that great to me either but to each his own.

Well, I like both the look and the feel of a low profile ride. I don't know why, I mean, it feels like your bum is dragging on the floor and it can be really quite intimidating when there are taller vehicles or trucks nearby. But all the same, they tend to ride very smooth.

I love the look and feel of low profile tyres. They have better grip on dry roads, better handling in turns and at high speeds, plus make for a firmer ride because they are stiffer. The downside of course, is that they are unsuitable for off-road.

Sunny as I really don't know, does this depend on the type of car using them or not? I don't think I have used any before and would like to know more, thanks.

I guess to each his own. It just seems like a lot of money to spend on wheels to me and if you want a decent spare then you are stuck getting five rims and tires instead of four. A firm ride may be good on the highway but I would think a good pothole could mess up one of them pretty good.

No, it shouldn't depend on the type of car (whether it be sedan, station wagon, coupe, ute, etc.), although I would imagine that they're not really suitable for 4WDs and such as these types of vehicles are meant more for off road and uneven surfaces. It is true that low profiles are more expensive, but if you're into their look and the enhanced driving performance they give you on flat roads, then they're good, though you've got to watch the potholes and speed bumps more carefully. My own car has them, and I love them. :D But as escape said, to each their own, I think.

I can understand to each their own but sometimes you have to be realistic. Have you ever just seen something on another persons car thinking “Why would they do that”? I have that issue sometimes and wonder if I am just being too picky.

I personally don't have the low profile tires. However, on some cars I think it looks pretty stylish. I don't know what kind of ride they give so I can't comment on that. I just think it all depends on what you like and what looks good.

Low profile doesn't necessarily mean lower height. You might get larger rims but lower profile tires and still be the same height you were before.

If a car comes with lower profile tires as an option then it probably has the appropriate suspension to handle it. However if you're adding lower profile tires you really should be replacing your suspension with something more appropriate than stock suspension. The lower profile tires also allow cars to push corners harder without as much risk (if any) of blowing a tire by separating the side wall from the rim.

I can't recall the name but I've recently seen a rubberless tire that has suspension built into the tire. One layer looks like the same general design that's behind a trestle bridge.
