Best Type of Trailer

We're looking to pick up a small utility trailer for dump runs and other stuff but are really struggling with what would be best to pull with the Escape. We borrowed a friend's that had a nice triangulated hitch attachment instead of the single bar which made it more stable. Is this a matter of preference?
