Mustang Week-Vaughn Gittin Jr. Drifting Demonstration

(Myrtle Beach, SC) – Wednesday morning dawned bright and warm in Myrtle Beach. I had been up for a while, stoked to have the opportunity to see Vaughn Gittin Jr. in action at the Myrtle Beach Speedway. In fact, stoked probably even didn’t describe it…bouncing off the walls was more like it!

When we arrived at the speedway, the Mustang Week Autocross runs were starting to take place. Soon after our arrival they closed down the gates that allowed people to walk across the speedway to the infield, and just after 11:00am Gittin took to the track.

He made a couple of laps around the track getting his tires warm, and then began several laps of high speed drifting, 180’s, and the tire smoke that makes him famous. In fact, at one point he did a 180 and slid over next to the inside retaining wall right next to me. This allowed me the perfect opportunity to catch a shot of his helmet peering out his window appearing to stare straight at me!

He finished up his time on the track, and kept his promise of slaying a set of tires, by doing a punishing sideways burnout down the front stretch. If you look closely in one of the later photos you can even see the sparks from the steel-belted tires.

After finishing his demo, Gittin headed out to make the journey to Monroe, Washington, where he would compete in front of a sold out crowd at Evergreen Speedway. The final result of the competition would end with Gittin taking the win, placing him in the lead of the Formula Drift Pro Championship point going into the last two events of the season.
