Factory 2011 Mustang GT becomes Iron Stang

(Richmond, Va) – It was day one of the 2011 SEMA Show in Vegas that while on my way to the Ford Motor Company exhibit that something very cool caught my attention and drew me in. I saw the blue glowing lights in the distance from the Ford booth but it was the Saleen Speedlab booth that this monster was at. Before me was a 2011 Mustang GT that had gone thru an extensive transformation into an S302R American Iron Series race car. I needed to know more, and thats when I met Kevin from Performance Autosport, Inc. who’s Richmond, VA. based speed shop was responsible for the build.

Kevin was kind enough to follow up after the SEMA Show and emailed me a complete blow by blow of the 2011 Mustang GT build and its adventures in the 2011 NASA Mid-Atlantic American Iron Series. The story begins with Chris Cobetto, the NASA Mid-Atlantic Regional Director and the owner of Performance Autosport, Mark LaMaskin who head to the 2010 SEMA Show in search for support in the form of sponsorship for this undertaking.

After a week of schmoozing over the higher-ups from several different companies the initial sponsorship list consisted of: HRE Wheels, BullyDog Performance, Saleen Speedlab, Rockland Gear, OG Racing, Exedy Clutches, Hawk brake pads, Baer Racing, American Racing Headers, Grassroots Motorsports, Ford Racing, Tiger Racing, and a few others. Everyone loved the idea and the plan began to come together.

Below are several photos provided by PAS that show a factory 2011 Mustang GT off the showroom floor, to a completed and race ready S302R which competed in the 2011 NASA Mid-Atlantic American Iron Series.
