(San Diego, CA) - The 15th annual Coronado Speed Festival took place on Saturday and Sunday, September 22nd and 23rd on the airfield at Naval Air Station North Island across the bay from downtown San Diego. Car lovers got to enjoy vintage races on the runway, a car show, and static displays of military aircraft as part of a tribute to the men and women who serve our country.
The racing action on the track was broken down into 9 groups with entries that included Shelby GT350s, Cobras, Falcons, Trans AM era Mustangs as well as LeeRoy Yarborough's NASCAR Ford Torino Talledega. NASCAR fans also enjoyed several historic racecars that were once driven by Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliott, Darrell Waltrip, and even Dale Earnhardt.
In between all of the races there was also a brief drifting exhibition put on by a group of amateur drivers along with two Formula DRIFT pros, Ryan Kado in his Forged Racing/Nexen Tire 350z and Matt Powers in his Need for Speed/Nitto Tire Nissan s14.
Yards away from the pieces of history turning laps on the track, fans were able to check out hundreds of hot rods lined up in the Car Corral where almost every brand was represented in some form or fashion. Ford fans enjoyed the Shelby Cobras, Ford GTs, and Mustangs from nearly every generation and special edition ever made.
