Recalls Ford Engines - Spark Plug Defect (04/14/08)
Spit Spark Plug Ignites Ford Truck Thousands of Ford truck owners have paid thousands of dollars to repair the damage caused by the mighty Ford V-8 engine spitting a spark plug from its aluminum cylinder head. „I was driving my 2001 Ford F-150 from Cleveland to Columbus when all of the sudden I heard a loud pop then a loud continuous popping sound came from the engine,“ David said in a ConsumerAffairs.com complaint dated March 21, 2007. „At first I was a little scared because I was in the middle of traffic on I-71 boxed in between two semi trucks. I couldn't move to the right or left. "When I finally was able to move to the side of the road, I opened the hood and what did I find?“ he wrote. " A spark plug melted to a piece of plastic and a spark plug coil with the spring sticking out sparking against another piece of plastic. I can only wonder what would have happened if I touched the energized spark coil or if it came in contact with metal and I touched the metal. Or even worse, what if the sparking coil came in contact with something flammable?"
Specialty accessories voided by warranty, Mustang 1994
SEMA works hard to protect consumers’ rights to drive accessorized, customized and vintage vehicles. SEMA keeps close tabs on legislators in Washington, DC, and also in each state within the U.S., so SEMA members and anyone who loves cars and trucks can protest pending legislation that might harm our hobby, as well as endorse legislation that’s good for car lovers. SEMA also has helped numerous consumers interact with car dealers, who sometimes try to get away with charging for repairs on a modified vehicle by claiming (wrongly) that specialty accessories have voided its warranty Mustang 1994 http://www.sema.org/…artPage.aspx
Fired Up? Heres more recalls now my Ford Explorer...what ever
Ford Explorer Class Action Settlement An updated communication has been released regarding the Class Action Settlement on 1991–2001 MY Explorers in the states of CA, IL, TX and CT.
Update: A toll-free number, 1–866–833–7918, has been established in the case, along with a website, where notices, a claim form, and the settlement agreement may be obtained. Those affected may also write to Ford Explorer Settlement, PO Box 4850, Portland, OR 97208. CLASS DEFINITIONS The settlement includes all persons who fall within any of the following groups: All people and entities, who bought, owned or leased new or used 1991–2001 model year Ford Explorers in California between 1990 and August 9, 2000, who either (a) currently own or lease the vehicle(s) or (b) sold or whose lease for such vehicle(s) expired or otherwise terminated after August 9, 2000, and who resided in California on March 16, 2006. All residents of Illinois on September 27, 2004, who purchased, owned, or leased, at any time between 1990 and September 27, 2004, Ford Explorers, model years 1991 through 2001, that are or were equipped with Firestone ATX, ATX II, or Wilderness tires. All persons who owned or leased 1991–2001 model year Explorers in Texas or Connecticut on August 9, 2000, and who are residents of Texas or Connecticut as of December 5, 2007
Background: A class action lawsuit was filed against Ford on behalf of all California persons and entities who bought, owned or leased new or used 1991–2001 model year Explorers. Plaintiffs allege that Ford violated California’s Unfair Competition Law by concealing an alleged tendency to roll over in all 1991–2001 Ford Explorers. Plaintiffs are claiming their vehicles lost value when this alleged tendency became public after the recall of Firestone tires in August 2000. Ford has shown that the Explorer is safe, that there was no new information about rollovers in 2000 and there was no drop in resale values.
The settlement that was approved by the court on Tuesday, April 15th provides discount certificates worth $500 toward the purchase or lease of a new Ford Explorer or $300 toward the purchase or lease of any other new Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury. Certificates will be valid for 12 months from the date issued. The certificates can be used in conjunction with other Ford offers and incentives, but only one certificate can be used at a time. Certificates must be applied for by April 29, 2008, and the certificates will arrive this summer. Consumers must have the certificate in hand to use the discount.

Safety Recall Involving Ford Cam Position Sensor
Voluntary Safety Recall Involving Cam Position Sensor Ford is conducting a voluntary customer safety recall of approximately 1.18 million 1997–2003 model year Ford F-Super Duty trucks, E-Series vans and Excursions currently registered in the U.S. due to a concern over robustness of the cam position (CMP) sensor that may result in degraded engine performance including hesitation, stumble or stalling. This recall involves older vehicles that are powered by 7.3L diesel engines manufactured by International; our current vehicle lines, which are equipped with 6.0L and 6.4L diesel engines, do not experience this issue. : There have been 14 allegations of minor accidents or loss of control concerns, but no injuries due to this concern in over 10 years of vehicle service and billions of miles driven. Owners will be notified (phased mailings will take place between mid-Dec and end of May) and instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln/Mercury dealer to have their vehicles inspected, and if necessary repaired. There will be no charge to owners for this service
$30,000 ford truck disabled when the spark plugs blew out
T.J. of Wichita Falls, Texas, complained two years ago that the spark plug
blew out of his 1999 Ford F-150. „It is costing me $3,000 to fix
this problem. I just returned from the war overseas in Iraq and this is
what I get to come home to,“ T.J. said. a petition was filed less
than three weeks after Ford recalled 3.8 million vehicles, a
year's worth of sales, to fix a cruise-control switch that can overheat and
cause fires. That recall, the fifth-largest ever in the United States, included
the same vehicles and model years, he said,Ford had much to say to any of the
thousands of consumers whose $30,000 trucks have been disabled when the
spark plugs blew out, resulting in repair bills averaging around $3,000. The
vehicles in question all have an aluminum cylinder head. „Many mechanics
feel the head contains an insufficient number of threads to hold the plugs when
under stress, so they have a greater than normal tendency to fail,“ said
Christopher of Palmdale, Calif., whose truck blew its plug in 2002. „Ford
is not acknowledging any problem, so there's no guidance from them on the
best way to proceed with repair,“
"Some people have had heli-coils inserted, While some have had to have the
entire engine replaced.
Others have had a recurrence of the failure, due to lack of direction from
Ford."
Triton V-8 and V-10 engines in model years 1997 to 2007
Most of the complaints of spit spark plugs at ConsumerAffairs involve vehicles with Triton V-8 and V-10 engines in model years 1997 to 2007. This includes the Econoline vans, F-Series trucks, the Explorer, Expedition, Excursion, Crown Victoria and some models of the Mustang. More than 200 consumers have written to ConsumerAffairs about the problem over the last five years. In nearly every case, the Ford owners also complained to Ford, only to be told that the problem was not covered under their warranty and disclaiming any knowledge of a broader problem. Many Ford dealers feign surprise at the sight of a spark plug blown out of its position in the cylinder head and profess to have never seen anything like the mess spread out before them.

Truck was misfiring on one cylinder at 51,000 miles
A member just sent me this: 2002 F-150 Super crew V8 5.4 Liter engine that has a blown out two spark plugs from there place. I am writing to you in response to the literature i have read on the internet concerning this problem.
a 2004 f-150 lariat super cab. the truck was misfiring on one cylinder at 51,000 miles and at 59,000, three cylinders where misfiring and i was told by the ford dealership that i needed new plugs.. so i put it in the shop to get them changed. well it took 19 days before i got my truck back. the dealerships mechanic broke the plugs in the head and they told me that i would have to pay for the extra parts. gaskets for the heads glue ext. and for the extra man hours.. well that was $2775.00. i all most passed out. well the day i got to pick up my truck it vibrates and i get on the highway and make it across town and the water pump shaft breaks and the clutch on the cooling fan broke.. they never got the timing right because the truck vibrates when it idles now.. but they changed the water pump and clutch.. which they paid for and i had to go back again because the header hose came off and leaked all the antifreeze out again.. well this all happened in a 23 day period.. that was outrages price and i felt ripped off. just to change spark plugs
