No matter you must have heard about Ford announced the release of a limited-edition Mustang to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the movie Bullitt. A big hit with Steve McQueen’s iconic nine-minute car chase though the streets of San Francisco which have defined chase scenes on the big screen. It also cemented the 1968 Ford Mustang GT in film history. The film is one of many reasons the Mustang holds a unique place in the hearts of automobile consumers.
Honoring this fact, the Ford Mustang Bullitt limited-edition comes in Dark Highland Green to match the exterior of the original. This distinctive color has appeared on only one other model, the 2001 Bullitt GT. The only other available color is the gloss black finish seen on the cars the hit men drove in the chase scene.

The 2008 Mustang Bullitt incorporates the latest in Ford Racing Technology, as well. Beginning with a base Mustang GT, the car’s engineers tuned its 4.6L V8 up to 315 horsepower. They brought the live rear axle over from the Shelby GT500, which uses a tall 3.73:1 gear that makes the model quicker off the line. The stock GT’s shocks and struts were also swapped out for new units that increase balance and permit more aggressive driving, for those who want to channel their inner Steve McQueen. With a production run of 7,700 vehicles, this limited-edition model will be available in January of 2008

Steve McQueen came up with the idea of going against his famous car racing abilities by portraying Papa Thorson as a terrible driver.

When Steve McQueen arrived at one of locations used for the film, he was checked into a really nice hotel with all the amenities available at the time. When he found out that the crew was staying in a cheaper motel nearby, he checked out of the hotel and stayed in the motel with the crew.

According to numerous biographies and documentaries on Steve McQueen's life, one of the first signs of problems relating to the cancer in his lungs (which would claim his life) occurred when shooting a scene in which McQueen is running down the street and turns a corner. When the director yelled, „Cut!,“ McQueen didn't come back around the corner. McQueen was found leaning against a wall trying desperately to catch his breath.

The real Ralph Thorson, portrayed by Steve McQueen in The Hunter, was killed by a car bomb in 1994.

THE secrets of Steve McQueen’s final years, when he abandoned movie stardom for an anonymous odyssey through smalltown America in search of happy families, are to be revealed in a memoir by his last wife, Barbara. The “king of cool” left Hollywood after the 1974 blockbuster The Towering Inferno and crisscrossed the United States, making friends with “ordinary people” who often failed to recognise their burly, heavily bearded fishing or drinking pal for days.

“They thought he was some dirty old man with this young girl, running around the country,” said Barbara McQueen in her first interview with a British newspaper since his death in 1980. “Which he got a hell of a kick out off. Mind you, it was also true!” Their three-year relationship was more peaceful than his first marriage to Neile Adams, his teenage sweetheart, which ended when he put a gun to her head in a jealous rage, or his second to Ali MacGraw, his co-star in The Getaway, which also ended in bitterness.

“This was Steve laying aside all his Hollywood stuff to become a real person,” Barbara said. “Although I fell in love with him at first sight, I never treated him like a star and Steve was easy with that.”

McQueen said she could not talk about her husband until, three years ago, she reached 50, the age he was when he died of cancer.

“We talked about writing a book with his stories and my photographs but were always too busy to get it down. It was going to be called The Long Haul. He made a joke about it when I wheeled him down a hospital corridor for blood tests — the long hall, he called it.”

Steve McQueen: The Last Mile, which she wrote with her husband’s biographer Marshall Terrill, will be published in November when Bonhams & Butterfields, the auctioneers, host what is expected to be the last significant sale of his memorabilia in Los Angeles.

The Oregon farmgirl turned model said she was “house clearing” before moving from her home in rural Montana. “It is time to say goodbye, not to Steve but to the clutter he left behind. He bought everything he liked in twos, so there was a lot of stuff just hanging around here.”

The auction will include motorbikes, saddles and his truck with the number plate MCQ3188, the last digits of his identity number when he lived in a Californian juvenile remand home. She is also selling a pair of blue Persol sunglasses that he made famous in The Thomas Crown Affair, a film she saw only recently. “It made me cry, so I will not be watching any more of his films.”

Because McQueen shunned the press, there were many rumours about how they met, but his widow has finally disclosed the truth.

In July 1977, when he was still married to MacGraw, he was smitten after spotting a picture of her advertising Club Med holidays in a magazine.

“So he set up a casting session for some film that was not quite happening at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Los Angeles where he lived, and I met him in the lobby with my agent. But when I saw him I realised I had been confusing him with Paul Newman.

“And then I realised who he was and that I had had a crush on him when I was a kid when he was on television in the series Wanted: Dead or Alive. That was pretty strange. But I knew this was the man I wanted to marry.”

Shortly afterwards they ran away together. They eventually moved into McQueen’s beach house in Malibu, west of Los Angeles, next door to Keith Moon, the drummer of the British rock band the Who.

“Steve found him passed out on the beach dressed in a Nazi uniform, complete with jodhpurs, cap, leather coat and a swastika armband. Steve pulled him back to safety and deposited him on his doorstep for someone else to clean up.”

After the rocker got into a fight with McQueen’s teenage son Chad and refused to curb his beach parties, McQueen took direct action. “One night Steve grabbed his shotgun and marched over to Moon’s house. Moments later I heard a blast reverberate throughout the neighbourhood as the stained glass window over Moon’s bathroom shattered. Steve marched calmly home and Mr Moon never said a word.”

After that the couple took to the road. McQueen, the star of The Great Escape, Bullitt and Papillon, was unrecognisable in a beard and wire glasses. They would go to small towns and make friends with the locals.

“Steve was a bit of a voyeur — a harmless one. He lurked outside people’s homes and watched them for an indecent amount of time watching television, eating a meal or having a family discussion.

“This made me uncomfortable, but I believe he did it because he didn’t have a normal life as a kid and he always wondered what the average family did when they were at home.”

Their last home was in the small Californian town of Santa Paula, where they lived in an aircraft hangar while their house was renovated. “He was perfectly content to spend his last days sitting in a wicker chair perched in front of our back garden shed. It was quiet and nobody bothered him — exactly what he wanted.”

As McQueen became ever more frail and American doctors refused to operate for fear of killing a famous actor, he flew to Mexico to have a stomach tumour removed. He died shortly after the operation.

Chad went to his bedside where he noticed an oddity. During his last months McQueen’s eyes had turned grey, but after his death they returned to their famous blue. “He again became the Steve McQueen the world knew,” his son said. “I closed his eyes and kissed him on his forehead and said, ‘So long, Pop, I love you’.”

Was diagnosed with a form of lung cancer, mesothelioma, which is related to asbestos exposure, although McQueen had been a heavy smoker as well, which may have been a contributing factor. He wore an asbestos-insulated racers suit in his race cars, and possibly was exposed to the harmful insulating material during his stint in the Marines. His first wife recalled many instances when he had recklessly exposed himself to the harmful substance by soaking a rag in liquid asbestos and placing it over his mouth while racing cars.

Diagnosed with mesothelioma lung cancer on December 22, 1979, but kept his terminal illness a secret up until over a month before his death. After being told his lung cancer was inoperable, he went to a health clinic in Mexico to undergo a controversial „apricot pit“ therapy that is still banned in the United States. Died from two heart attacks at 3:45 am on November 7 1980, less than 24 hours after undergoing successful surgery to remove the malignant tumors in his stomach. According to the doctor present at the operation, his right lung was entirely cancerous.

Steve McQueen passed away on November 7, 1980, only 50 years of age, and his ashes were scattered at sea. He married three times and had a lifelong love of motor racing, once remarking, „Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.“

Was cremated and had his ashes scattered into the Pacific Ocean He was voted the 56th Greatest Movie Star of all time by Entertainment Weekly.

The „King of Cool“ became a born-again Christian shortly before he died, due to the influence of his third wife Barbara Minty and his flying instructor Sammy Mason. He went through bible studies with the Reverend Billy Graham. McQueen's favorite Bible verse was John 3:16 which reads, „For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life“.

Issued a private pilot's license by the FAA in 1979 after learning to fly in a Stearman bi-plane, which he purchased for that purpose. After his death it was sold at auction,along with his large collection of vehicles, in 1982.

Trained in Tang Soo Do with 9th degree blackbelt Pat E. Johnson (NOT Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris as is popularly believed.) His son was trained in karate by Norris. Lee trained him in Jeet Kune Do.

Served in the United States Marine Corps According to military records released by the Pentagon in 2005, Marine Private First Class Steve McQueen was confined to base for being absent without leave for 30 days and fined $90 after being AWOL from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. McQueen joined the Marines Corps at 17 and worked as a tank driver and mechanic, which probably spurred his lifelong interest in vehicles, especially motorcycles. He received a commendation for rescuing five Marines in a training accident, and later took advantage of military educational benefits to study at the Actors' Studio in New York City McQueen's name somehow appeared on President Richard Nixon's „List of Enemies“ in 1972. In reality, McQueen was conservative in his political beliefs, with a strong belief in self-help. In 1963, he had declined to participate in the March on Washington for civil rights and, in 1968, he refused to join many of his Hollywood peers in supporting Senator Robert F. Kennedy's pre­sidential campaign. An incredulous Ali MacGraw asked McQueen how he could have been considered a threat by Nixon, adding, „You are the most patriotic person I know!“ McQueen responded to the whole affair by flying an enormous American flag outside his house. In 1960 with his growing success he formed his own production company called Scuderia Condor Enterprises, which he ran until 1963 when he and his family moved to 2419 Solar Drive and he renamed his company to Solar Productons, Inc and would produce many films under this banner until his death.
